I keep thinking about the train elevator – since it was first mentioned – but it is the linear length that puts me off. A helix does take up nearly as much space though. Half of a 24″ helix is 6 foot long which would be enough to fit a typical branchline train. It could sit behind the layout in the corner and go up and down… if I can get the engineering to work.
