I have modelled the New Haven in the diesel era for a few years but keep getting drawn to the steam era. Having decided to add a turntable and roundhouse to my layout, I needed some steam locos to fill out the 10 stalls. There are not many straight out-of-the-box plastic New Haven steam locomotives but there are some which can be converted with a little bit of work. I chose to do a J-2 conversion from a Broadway Heavy Mikado.
I have written up the conversion as an article for the Model Railroader locomotive kit bash contest. I’ll let you all know if that goes anywhere. In the meanwhile, here are a couple of finished photos:
