Day 4: Cajon Pass back to Phoenix

We stayed at the Best Western at Cajon Pass. I woke up to the sounds of trains coming through the pass and because we were so close we were able to get up to the pass before breakfast:

We had a bit of a wait for a train so I took an arty photo whilst waiting:

Then a couple of trains showed up. The first was coming up the grade on the main line:

Another train came down the pass on the high line.

We went back for breakfast. There’s a great view just from the motel car park:

We chased some trains up and down the pass. We’d got a pass for the roads in the National Park so we could go anywhere.

You can cross all the railroad tracks to get right up into the pass:

The ballast is pink which is so cute and girly!

I tried a few more arty blast past photos:

We sat in McDonalds for an age trying to decide whether to hang around in case more trains showed up or to go back to Phoenix. A while later we booked our Phoenix hotel and set off home via Joshua Tree National Park. I nearly went there 20 years’ ago so it was on the bucket list.

It’s a beautiful park but was a 3 hour detour for us to go through the whole park. The first half is where the Joshua Trees are.

There also some really cool rock formations that look like piles of pebbles but much larger:
