10th day of Christmas: Real Trains!

I love visiting preserved railways and often commute by train.  Any chance to go long distance by train is preferable to driving in my view!

Most years I visit the Severn Valley Railway, which is my local preserved railway.  It also runs past West Midlands Safari Park so it’s surreal to be travelling on a steam train past rhinos and elephants!

You can take mainline steam in the summer from Birmingham to Stratford on the Shakespeare Express.

You can visit private railways which are stunning such as Statfold Barn.

And I can just take the train to London.  This is my daily commute at New Street Station, Birmingham.

  1. Hi kathy
Glad you like the SVR. Two things about the SVR I simply love and it is they found a rake of real LMS coaches in their own backyard and acquired them from I think, Axminster Carpets and they converted them an exhibition train to a real LMS train. They also have the fantastic Stanier Mogul. I love the big 2-6-0s as they help me remember the D&RG narrow gauge Moguls I rode behind in the 1950s. Been going to the SVR since 1970 and at that time trains stopped at Highley and Kidderminster was a pipe dream. Another thrill was to have a ride in the former GWR Flying. Banana railcar. W22 I think it was. That reminded me of the D&RG galloping Goose, but I never got a ride on that. Enjoying your messages. Cheers from Tom Jenkins
